Channels Nursery

Situated at 1 Brassie Wood, Broomfield, within the Channels development area of Chelmsford, this purpose-built 76-place day nursery is designed to serve the growing Channels and Beaulieu communities. The project fulfils the vision set out in the outline planning permission for an Early Years Facility, offering a modern, thoughtfully crafted space to support young learners.

Design and Collaboration
The nursery has been designed in close partnership with Seymour House, renowned for their expertise in early childhood education. Their input has ensured the facility meets the highest standards of functionality and safety, creating a bright, secure, and inspiring environment for children to play, learn, and grow.

Architectural Highlights
The two-storey building stands out with its distinctive mono-pitched roof, a striking yet context-sensitive feature that integrates seamlessly into the residential surroundings. The design breaks down the building’s mass into smaller articulated forms, employing yellow brickwork, slate cladding, and timber-effect materials to harmonise with the local vernacular while maintaining a unique identity. Generously sized windows are carefully positioned to provide natural light and sightlines at a child’s scale.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency
The project demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, aiming to achieve a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. A significant number of solar panels will generate almost a third of the nursery’s energy needs, delivering around 10kWh/sq.m of power. This approach not only reduces the building’s carbon footprint but also ensures long-term energy efficiency.

Landscaping and Access
The surrounding landscape integrates mature trees, hedgerows, and vibrant play surfaces to create a welcoming and secure outdoor space. Conveniently located within walking distance of nearby residential areas, the nursery encourages sustainable travel via footpaths and cycleways. Dedicated parking for staff and parents ensures accessibility, while the building layout prioritises safety and efficiency.
