We are delighted to share that our proposal for the Barns at Hall Road West Bergholt redevelopment planning permission has successfully secured planning approval after a challenging and highly collaborative process. This marks a significant milestone in the journey of transforming these historic barns into modern, sustainable homes.
The project is set within the rural landscape to the west of West Bergholt, a location known for its scenic beauty and agricultural heritage. It involves the transformation of existing agricultural barns into two high-quality dwellings. The site consists of four barns, each with unique characteristics: from a historic, traditional timber-framed barn to modern steel-framed structures. The design strategy focuses on a sensitive adaptation of these structures, aiming to preserve their original character while incorporating contemporary elements that meet the needs of modern living.
Securing planning permission for the Barns at Hall Road West Bergholt redevelopment planning permission was no small feat. We worked closely with our planning consultant and the local authority to address concerns related to scale, layout and architectural design. Through a process of design refinement, we ensured the proposal would complement the surrounding landscape and respect the historical and cultural significance of the site. The final design is a balanced approach that incorporates heritage preservation while also embracing sustainable, modern design solutions.
The redevelopment will see the careful restoration of the barns, with Barn A being the oldest and most historically significant structure. It will be sensitively restored and extended using matching materials to maintain its authenticity. Barn B, a more modern steel-framed barn, will be reclad and extended, introducing a cohesive and contemporary dwelling that complements its surroundings. Additionally, redundant agricultural buildings will be removed to open up views of the landscape, and new planting and hedgerows will be introduced to enhance the biodiversity and soften the developmentās impact.
Sustainability is at the heart of this project. The design maximises the re-use of existing structures to reduce embodied carbon, while also integrating high-performance insulation, ground-source heat technology, and water-efficient systems. These modern sustainable features ensure the homes meet high environmental standards while blending seamlessly into the rural context.
With planning permission now secured, we are excited to move forward with the delivery of this high-quality conversion that honors both the historic fabric of the barns and the needs of contemporary living. This project serves as a great example of how sensitive design, combined with effective collaboration with planning authorities, can result in a sustainable and respectful redevelopment that benefits both the local community and the environment.
