Private House, Stoke-by-Nayland

This project was conceived by the client’s wish to downsize and to re-purpose an existing storage barn to create a new contemporary home.

The design was developed to preserve the existing natural physical features and enhance the surrounding landscape.

The proposed works involved the retention of the primary structure, existing frame and overall shape and scale of the barn. The opportunity was taken to create a highly efficient new home and encapsulate the retained structure in  high levels of insulation,  re-cladding the exterior walls using renewable materials.

Inside, the space is divided either side of a double height staircase and landing. An enclosed snug is to the north-west, and an open plan kitchen living room to the south-east. A new first floor contains three en-suite bedrooms. An entrance porch and boot room were created as a new single storey extension to the west which articulates the space around the building. providing a private garden terrace area.
